A Passionate Affair with Trees

Let me acquaint you with these words from Guru Nanak Ji –

It is high time each one of us does our bit to protect the environment like a crusader.

A Passionate Affair with Trees

My romance with trees began as I walked out of school to see red silk cotton flowers falling plop-plop on the ground. They dropped with a seductive thud and I was smitten by the satiny texture lurking inside their sepals. I was enthralled with the sweet-smelling Devil Tree.

How can one be impervious to the splendour of yellow laburnums, pink kachnars, Persian lilacs, violet jacarandas, scarlet gulmohars, or flame of the forest?

“I sauntered below your sprawling banyan tree

A toddler playing house-house

Amidst violet petunias and sunny nasturtium

Mother Nature, your basket nurtured me with luscious tastes and scents

While I guzzle fossil fuel as petrol and kerosene

To race my automobiles on your ample chest

I will lie on a bamboo pyre tied with jute rope

Logs will burn to make me ash

I am taking this moment to thank you for your mercies

For I had neglected a selfless mother like all ungrateful wretches do”

“To me a lush carpet of pine needles or spongy grass is more welcome than the most luxurious Persian rug” – Helen Keller

A Passionate Affair with Trees

I sign off by requesting my readers to do their tiny bit to preserve our wondrous nature for the coming generations.

Darakht haathh hilaate thhe rahnumai ko Musafiron ne toh Kuchh bhi nahin kaha Mujh se (IA Quraishi)

In all things of nature there is something of the marvellous
