Advocate Sumitra Choudhary sits with Rashmeet Kaur Chawla to talk about her journey toward fighting for human rights and equality

Sumitra Choudhary, a seasoned legal practitioner at the Supreme Court of India, is a pioneer in promoting gender equality, sustainable development, and inclusive growth. With her diverse academic background combined with extensive international exposure, Choudhary is a managing partner of SKC Lawyers & Solicitors. As a legal adviser, she works toward creating legal awareness among women through WIN (Women in Networking), and advocates for social causes globally. As a law practitioner, Chaudhary is keen on making every workspace safe for women which not only protects their rights but also feel safe. “We need to challenge the stereotypes and create more opportunities for women to thrive professionally,” says the lawyer. Marching for equality Growing up in rural Rajasthan, Chaudhary was raised in an inclusive environment where women were given equal rights and opportunities. Her education in law, further the idea of equality that she experienced but felt absent in many households.

As a law practitioner, she ensures her legal expertise is met with a deep understanding of human values. It is the dynamic nature of cases in the Supreme Court that keeps her motivated to pursue fair justice for those not guilty. While it is not easy to balance between the evidence and personal opinion in the court, Chaudhary takes one case at a time which allows her to study it well for the correct justice.

Social activism

Over the years, Chaudhary has actively participated in social causes through her writings and speeches on global platforms. She has also been invited as a distinguished guest at the US Congress’ National Prayer Breakfast Meeting in Washington, an esteemed annual event of the US government. She is also a regular invitee to the International Women’s Congress, where she champions to cause of women empowerment
